Description

L-ilbiesi tat-Tieġ f’Malta fis-seklu 19 u 20 / 19th- and 20th-century bridal wear in Malta

The styles of wedding gowns, especially those associated with Catholic marriages in Malta, have varied considerably over the years – from Victorian to Edwardian to 1930s’ modernism, 1950s’ post-war, and postmodernism in the third quarter of the 20th century. Travel, telecommunications, the advent of photography, fashion and needlecraft magazines and patterns, and the manufacture and production of various fabrics and haberdasheries, all contributed to a vast selection in creating the dress for the occasion. However, apart from fashion trends, there were other factors that influenced the bride’s choices – the family socio-economic, religious, and financial status, or the bride’s own personal situation, such as whether orphaned or widowed. The political situation in Malta, such as the colonial era, and the pro-British or pro-Italian divide during the first half of the 20th century determined the attire.
