During its Hospitaller period, Malta underwent a profound transformation. From the Order of St John’s arrival in 1530 to its departure in 1798, the island was reshaped in nature and character. Over these 268 years, the Order’s mission, vast landholdings across Europe, princely patronage, political influence, military role in Mediterranean conflicts, and strong diplomatic presence created a powerful, lasting force for change. Malta evolved from a vulnerable medieval island dependent on Sicily into a flourishing early modern state comparable to major European cities.
