Description
In 1685 Bro Andrea Pozzo SJ painted the first of his trompe l’oeil cupolas in the Jesuits’ church, in Rome. After that he painted other ‘false’ domes in other churches. Two such small designs of his were either sent or brought to Malta to serve as a model on which the painted dome of the Gozo Cathedral was executed by Antonino Manuele Pippi, and raised in place, in 1739.
