Forgotten Stories from the French Period in Malta
The unquestioned historical narrative of the French period in Maltese history told the story of the brave Maltese who rose up against the French and who then, with the help of the English, got rid of the villainous French. The basic facts from this story in Maltese history seem solid enough and correct; however, as Oscar Wilde was fond of saying, ‘The truth is rarely pure and never simple.’
For the past decade this narrative has been hotly contested. Once Upon a Time in 1798, 1799 & 1800 makes a contribution to the ongoing debate that does not necessarily irrevocably commit to either side of the twenty-first-century contemporary war (an academic one but a battle nonetheless) over the French period.
