My Pizza & Toffee Apples in the 1950’s tells of the childhood of a little girl born in 1947, the baby boom year. Her family is made up of a mother, Italian to the soul and of a Maltese father, British in his upbringing and ways. Her little sister, Daniela, is part of the family but so is Pat’s friend Roy, her childhood companion. The 1950’s were a time of great change, of historical moments which affected people’s lives and were to change the world forever. The author cannot but mention some of these episodes, yet to her as a child; ‘Summer, Oh! Summer, was salty days at the seaside and music from the Chalet and the Officer’s mess. It was delicious pizza cooked in mother’s kitchen at 3C McIver Street and pretty dresses being made for our holiday in Italy. Summer was also toffee apples out of Nanny Jean’s picnic basket, swimming in the shallow water which collected in the unused salt pans and chasing each other on the rocks at Qui-Si-Sana’…
