The Maltese Falcon is the fastest known bird of prey. It can dive at speeds of 320km per hour.
When Emperor Charles V ceded the Maltese Islands to the Knights of St John on 23rd March,1530 one of the conditions imposed was that every year on the Feast of All Saints (1st November) a wild peregrine falcon captured in Malta to be presented to the Viceroy of Sicily as an acknowledgement of the Order’s pledge towards the empire.
