Description

This book focuses on captured Italian servicemen, who were mainly crew members of aircraft shot down over the Maltese islands during the frequent air raids, or in the Mediterranean during the convoy battles. The intelligence reports compiled from the interviews make for intriguing reading. While the Geneva Convention of 1929 stipulated that prisoners were only obliged to disclose their name, rank, and serial number, many revealed far more. Some Italians recounted the circumstances of their aircraft being shot down, while others divulged vital details about their aircraft specifications and the squadriglia they were part of. Others shared their perspectives on their German allies. Naturally, there were individuals who fabricated stories and those who, mindful of security concerns, gave away very little.
