Between 1530 and 1798 there were among the Knights of Malta, quite a number from Austrian territories.
Although they held throughout these years important posts in the government of Malta, in diplomacy, navy and military forces, Austrian Knights havce not yet been deeply studied. The geographical and their personal connections with the Austrian-Habsburg House and the German Emperors had for Malta a special significance. In this respect this is the first publication of its kind which deals entirely and extensively with this theme. It is a combined effort of the historians Robert L. Dauber from Austria and Michael Galea from Malta.
The book includes a comprehensive review of the relations in diverse spheres of activities between Malta and Austria as well as ten detailed biographies during the 268 years (1530-1798) the Knights Hospitaller, a cosmopolitan and eminently European society, ruled the Maltese Archipelago.
