Mario Cassar

Mario Cassar graduated B.Ed. (Hons), M.A. (Maltese) and Ph.D. (Maltese Studies) at the University of Malta; his theses were respectively entitled Ir-Rumanz Malti fis-Snin Tletin (‘The Maltese Novel in the Thirties’), Mudelli Immaġinattivi fil-Poeżija Romantika Maltija (‘Imaginative Models in Maltese Romantic Poetry’), and Maltese Surnames: The Sicilian and Italian Connections. At present he is a Senior Lecturer II within the Department of Maltese at the University of Malta Junior College. In the period 1992–94 he was president of the Għaqda tal-Malti (Università) – ‘The (University) Maltese Society’, and was involved in the organization of a series of literary seminars and writing skills courses. He is the author of Ir-Reqqa tal-Kitba (‘The Exactitude of Writing’, Malta, 2000), a manual of Maltese grammar and orthography; The Surnames of the Maltese Islands: An Etymological Dictionary (Malta, 2003); and several critical essays and papers related to the study of Maltese onomastics, language, and literature. He has also co-authored Il-Qari tal-Letteratura (‘The Reading of Literature’, Malta, 2009) and L’ultima città musulmana: Lucera (Bari, 2012). He is a member of the Akkademja tal-Malti (‘The Maltese Academy’) and of ICOS (International Council of Onomastic Sciences).

Irċieva l-edukazzjoni tiegħu fl-Iskola Primarja ta’ Ħal Luqa (1968–1973); il-Kulleġġ Mount Carmel (illum St Elias), Santa Venera (1973–1978); l-Upper Secondary, il-Belt Valletta (1978–1980); u l-Università ta’ Malta (1981–1986), minn fejn iggradwa B.Ed. (Hons.) fl-1986, u aktar tard M.A. (Malti) fl-1996 u Ph.D. (Studji Maltin) fl-2011. It-teżijiet rispettivi tiegħu kienu intitolati: Ir-Rumanz Malti fis-Snin Tletin, Mudelli Immaġinattivi fil-Poeżija Romatika Maltija, u Maltese Surnames: The Sicilian and Italian Connections.

Għallem f’diversi skejjel, fosthom fil-Junior Lyceum Carlo Diacono taż-Żejtun. Issa ilu sa mill-1995 jaħdem fid-Dipartiment tal-Malti tal-Junior College, l-Imsida, fejn bħala Senior Lecturer II jgħallem il-lingwistika u l-letteratura Maltija.

Fis-snin 1992–1994 kien president tal-Għaqda tal-Malti (Università). Ta sehmu fl-organizzazzjoni ta’ diversi seminars letterarji u korsijiet fis-sengħa tal-kitba. Hu membru tal-Akkademja tal-Malti u tal-ICOS (soċjetà internazzjonali tal-onomastika). Attenda diversi konferenzi u korsijiet barra minn Malta relatati mal-lingwistika u l-onomastika.

Kiteb numru kbir ta’ artikli u papers akkademiċi f’ġurnali u rivisti lokali, l-aktar fuq il-letteratura u l-ilsien Malti, iżda anki fuq l-arti u ċ-ċinema. Ikkontribwixxa għadd ta’ artikli oħra fuq l-istorja ta’ Ħal Luqa u l-patrimonju artistiku tar-raħal fil-fuljett Leħen il-Parroċċa, kif ukoll fil-kotba tal-festa li joħorġu ta’ kull sena miż-żewġ soċjetajiet mużikali ta’ Ħal Luqa. Kiteb ukoll Ir-Reqqa tal-Kitba (2000), manwal fuq l-ortografija Maltija; u The Surnames of the Maltese Islands: An Etymological Dictioanry (2003), ktieb fuq is-sinjifikat u n-nisel tal-kunjomijiet Maltin. Huwa koawtur ta’ żewġ kotba oħra: Il-Qari tal-Letteratura (Malta, 2009) u L’ultima città musulmana: Lucera (Bari, 2012).
