Christian Mifsud

Christian Mifsud is an archaeologist by profession and serves as Principal Curator for Research and Documentation of Historic Buildings at Heritage Malta. He has more than 15 years of experience in archaeology, cultural heritage management, and the conservation of historic buildings across the Maltese Islands. Mifsud graduated in Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of Malta, later earning a Master’s degree in Baroque Studies, and has pursued doctoral research through the International Institute for Baroque Studies at the University of Malta. Alongside his curatorial work, he lectures in heritage-related subjects at the university.

Mifsud has directed and participated in numerous archaeological investigations, particularly those involving Malta’s historic buildings and urban landscapes. His research interests include: Archaeology of historic buildings, Historic urban planning, Architectural archaeology, Cultural heritage management, Digital and 3D documentation of heritage sites, and the history and development of Valletta and other historic Maltese settlements. His publications have explored topics such as the evolution of Valletta’s markets, Fort St Elmo, the Grand Master’s Palace, Roman archaeological sites in Gozo, and the relationship between archaeology and Malta’s architectural heritage. He has contributed to numerous scholarly journals, books, and international conferences.

In recognition of his research, Mifsud received the Malta Historical Society Award for Published Historical Research (Emerging Authors) in 2020. He continues to promote archaeology through public lectures, exhibitions, and educational initiatives organised by Heritage Malta.
