Béatrice Ruffié

Béatrice Ruffié is a French children’s author best known for creating the imaginative Akiko series, a collection of colourful picture books aimed at young readers. Her work is characterised by gentle storytelling, emotional themes, and a magical, dreamlike atmosphere that appeals especially to children aged around 3–6 years.
Ruffié gained recognition through the Akiko books, which follow the adventures of a unique and charming character, a “cat-unicorn”, often described as a mix between a cat and a unicorn, who lives in a soft, whimsical world filled with rainbows, friendship, and imagination. Throughout this series she introduces young readers to everyday childhood experiences like making friends, dealing with loneliness, or celebrating special moments while presenting them in a magical and reassuring way.

Her books are typically illustrated by artists such as Ophélie Ortal, whose bright, “kawaii”-style artwork complements Ruffié’s storytelling and helps bring the fantasy world of Akiko to life. The stories often focus on important early childhood themes, including friendship, empathy, curiosity, imagination, and emotional development, making them popular in both homes and early learning environments.

In addition to the Akiko series, Béatrice Ruffié has written other children’s titles showing her range within children’s literature. Her work is known for combining fantasy with real-life emotions, helping young readers understand their feelings while encouraging creativity and imagination.
