Alex Attard

Alex Attard is a Maltese art and architecture photographer, visual artist, and author whose work explores the relationship between landscape, architecture, history, and cultural memory. Born into a family with a long tradition in photography, he has developed a distinctive artistic practice that combines documentary precision with a highly expressive visual language. His photographs have been exhibited in Malta and internationally, and have appeared in leading architecture and design publications.

Attard is the author of the photographic publications Exposure: Fragmented Sculptures of an Island Coast (2023) and Bridges in Malta (2025), both celebrating the island’s natural and built heritage through striking visual narratives. He is also the creator of the acclaimed visual essay Parallel Existences: The Notarial Archives – A Photographer’s Inspiration (2018), an innovative project that transformed war-damaged notarial manuscripts into works of photographic art, inspiring an interdisciplinary publication that received the National Book Prize for Best Book Production. In addition, he collaborated on Palazzo De La Salle: Genesis and Evolution, documenting the history and architectural significance of one of Valletta’s most important historic buildings through photography and historical research.

Through his books, exhibitions, and artistic collaborations, Alex Attard has made a significant contribution to the visual documentation of Malta’s cultural and natural heritage. His work is characterised by a profound sensitivity to light, texture, and form, revealing unexpected beauty in both historic architecture and the natural landscape. By bringing together photography, history, and artistic interpretation, he has established himself as one of Malta’s leading contemporary photographic artists, creating works that preserve and reinterpret the islands’ architectural, environmental, and documentary legacy.
