Macartney, McElroy & Co. Ltd. Started operating electric trams in Malta 1905. The trams’ quarter century of operation was marked by vicissitudes as varied as the steep hills and the sharp curves on their route. Macartney, McElroy also operated the Baracca Lift, initially a minor adjunct to their Malta operation but subsequently invaluable in helping to pay off the tramway debts. The story of the trams and the lift entailed years of painstaking research for copy and photographs and concludes the authors trilogy on Maltese transport. Previous volumes dealt with the Malta Railway and the Malta Buses. While vestiges of the Malta Railway abound, nothing remains of the trams and the lift. This volume will hopefully evoke memories of both besides serving as a history of Macartney, McElroy & Co. Ltd. And a memorial to its Maltese and expatriate employees.
