This collection is, for the most part, made up of a number of papers most of which were present on my computer for many years as rough scripts or notes prepared for talks given in public lectures, seminars, and conferences and not intended for publication. Indeed they were only turned into papers for the purpose of producing this volume. In the process they needed very extensive re-writing, referencing, the insertion of foot-notes, and so on. It also includes three unpublished ‘responses’ to key-note speakers, two presented at international conferences and one, to Claude Mangion, not. Finally, there are two papers ‘The Ethics of Self-Creation: Nietzsche, Foucault, Rorty’, and ‘Foucault: Political Commitment and the Ethics of Self-Care’, that have not been presented anywhere but that I have put together for this volume from notes, comments, and in-depth elaborations on files in my computer relating to other articles and chapters in books involving these subjects that are published. The difference is that while the published articles and chapters related them with education the papers in this volume are purely about the ethics and politics of Foucault and Rorty.
