L-ogħla kafè fid-dinja

Charles B. Spiteri

alt

Jingħad li dan it-tip ta’ kafè mibjugħ fil-ħanut Starbucks, hu l-aktar wieħed li jiswa flus. Fih 60 espresso shots u jiswa €41.20.

Is-Sexagintuple Vanilla Bean Mocha Frappuccino, li fih 128 uqija, kien ordnat fi Starbucks, Texas u aktarx li hu meqjus mill-kumpanija bħala li jżomm it-titlu tal-aktar xarba għolja li qatt kellhom għall-bejgħ.

Ix-xarba nxtrat minn klijent magħruf biss bħala Andrew, li qiegħed ir-ritratt tiegħu fuq Twitter, bit-tazza ġganteska bil-kafè u l-irċevuta li ħallas għalih.

Iżda minkejja li l-Frappuccino jiswa aktar minn €41.2, Andrew ma ħallas xejn għalih, peress li hu gold member, fil-programm ta’ lealtà lejn Starbucks.

Il-programm jippermetti lill-gold members jieħdu xarba bla ħlas ma’ kull 12 li jixtru, u dak li jieħdu jista’ jkun għoli kemm iridu.

Għalhekk seta’ jieħu kafè kbir kemm ried, u peress li kien jaf li ma kellhomx kikkra kbira biżżejjed, hu ħa miegħu wkoll it-tazza tiegħu fil-ħanut.

Din ix-xarba qabżet dik tas-sena l-oħra, li tqieset bħala rekord, fejn raġel xtara 48-shot Frappuccino, li sewa €34.43

A Journey into the Past

It was the evening of the 10th of June of the year 2013. Just a week before my 77th birthday. I felt tired, maybe because of the heat of the day or because of the long walk I had just made along the new Dock No 1 waterfront.  Or maybe it was my old age. Whatever it was, I felt weary and needed a rest. Immediately I entered home, I collapsed on the armchair. My heavy eyes soon closed and I was in the marvelous world of dreams …………….

…………….. I opened the gate of the garden, stepped slowly inside and found myself in a large open space which appeared to be a beehive of activity. On close scrutiny, I recognized it to be the large square outside old city gate in Valletta. The old three-arched gate stood behind me.

I moved forward. There were too many people moving about, some entering the City, others going out of it. The bus terminus was busy with the old different-coloured buses transferring people to and from the outlaying towns and villages. I noted that the people close to me wore old fashioned clothes and, despite it being summer, none of them wore T-shirts or the kind of clothes we usually wear at this time of the year. Most men wore light white straw hats or caps and the majority of women wore black drab clothes. What is this?

I also saw several horse-drawn ‘karrozzini’, all doing a roaring trade, filled up with people going towards Floriana and beyond. It was evident that these were not tourists but Maltese going about their daily business. On my right I saw a man in the corner selling newspapers. I went up to him and bought a copy of the ‘Times of Malta’. I scanned the front page briefly. There was news that the luxury ship ‘Queen Mary’ had made its maiden voyage and had arrived in New York on 1 June and that Italy had annexed Etiophia after its forces had occupied its capital Addis Ababa.  I also noticed that the style of its presentation was different to the one I am used to. And, more strangely, the news stories were definitely not about the subjects I was reading about yesterday or the days before. Then, at the top right hand side of the paper, I saw the date – 10th June 1936! What is this?

My mind was in a whirl. As I looked around me I was thinking of what this might be. The only explanation I could find was that when I had opened the magic garden gate I must have been transported 77 years back in time. Amazing! I had read about ‘Star Gate’, the ‘Time Machine’, ‘black holes’ in space, time travelers and time warps. I was always intrigued by the scientist’s theory that if one were to travel at a speed exceeding that of light, then one would travel back or forward in time. Was this what had happened to me? Was the garden gate my ‘Star Gate?

At least I was at a place I knew well but at a time when my birth was one week away! I racked my brain to decide what to do in such strange circumstances. I recalled my mother saying that she and my father lived in Strada Buongiorno in Bormla during their early years of marriage. They would be the only people I know, even though they would not know me. Well, not yet! Not for another week at least! I decided to go and find them.

I took a green bus to Bormla. The city was familiar to me although very different from the Bormla I left only a few hours ago. Of course, this area around the dockyard was still in its pre-war state, of which I had only a bare recollection.  I sought Strada Buongiorno, took the steps upward to No 15 and saw my parent’s house. I remember this house after it was reconstructed following its destruction by German bombs during the Second World War. What shall I do? What shall I say? These were the only people who could help me, maybe let me stay with them until I sort things out. But who shall I say I am?  If I tell the truth they would certainly not believe me. And I would not blame them.

I used to have a very good rapport with my father.  I would bare my soul to him, tell him the truth. I knew that he was well-read so maybe he could have come across some science–fiction article on time travelling. The problem was that I was 77 years old and he was just 29! My story would be hard to believe. I thought, however, that I could convince him of who I really was.

The door was open but the ‘ante-porta’ was closed. With trepidation I knocked and waited. Nobody answered. I knocked again a little harder. A young woman came and opened the ‘ante-porta’. She must be my mother! She looked at me, an old man, dressed somewhat different from normal. “What do you want?” she asked me in a gentle sort of way. Of course she did not recognize me. How could she? I did not exist yet! But I was sure that she was my mother. I recognized her from the old photos I have of her in my album. “Is Guzeppi in please? I am his friend and would like to speak to him.”  I enquired.

She went inside and called my father who came immediately. “Hello”, he said, “who are you?” “Can we talk privately for moment please?” I pleaded hoping that he would not refuse me.  I remember that my father was always a kind and gentle man, ready to help anybody who needed his assistance. Even many years after his death in 1961, people who realized that I was his son, would recall incidents when he had helped them in one way or another. They had spoken so highly of him that I felt so proud to be his son.

“Yes, yes, come in.” he said. We sat down on the armchairs in the sitting room. I remember that he himself had made all the furniture in the house. Although in actual fact I was his son, to anybody who could see us then, it looked more that I was his father or grandfather! “I have to recount a story which, I know, is so strange that it is hard for you to believe. But I pray that you believe me because I am saying the truth.” I said anxiously.

He looked at me, smiled as he often used to do, patted me on my knee and said. “I’m listening, I’m curious after what you have just said”, he replied. There, in the house I recall so well, I opened my heart to my father, telling him that, despite my aged appearance, I was actually his own son; that through some unexplained method of time-travelling I have been transported from the year 2013 to 1936; that in actual fact at that very moment in time I was not yet born!

My mother came into the room to see if we needed anything. A two-year old child, a boy, was with her. He must be my elder brother John I realized. I also noticed that she was pregnant. That must be me inside her, just another week before I am born and enter this world. Dad told her that it’s all right, we do not need anything and she left us again to be alone. “It’s so far- fetched, so unbelievable” he said. “But strange things happen and I believe your story”, he continued.

I was relieved at last. My father had accepted me as his son. He believed me. But, he said, that it would be best if we do not tell this strange story to my mother. For one thing, it would be difficult for her to believe the story. And for another thing, it would be a shock for her which would not be advisable in her present state of very-advanced pregnancy.

Dad accepted to accommodate me with the family for the time being. I was delighted and relieved. After a week, when Mum was ready to give birth, the midwife was called. I sat with my father and brother downstairs in the outer room while the midwife was assisting my mother to give birth. My father looked at me and smiled. It is a strange feeling. My father, still in his prime of life and I am an old man.

Then we heard a baby crying and the midwife telling father that he has another baby boy. My father and I looked at each other. I got up, shook hands with him and said, “I have just been born, there cannot be two of me at the same time, now I have to leave and find the gate which will take me back to 2013.” Dad and I had tears in our eyes as we hugged each other. “Take care son” he said “take care!” Then he darted upstairs to my mother’s room where my birth had just taken place.

………………………….. Then I woke up from my sleep, rubbed my eyes with my back hand and looked around me. I was back to where I had started before the adventure into the past where I had met my father, mother and brother. And where I just nearly met myself!

Karfusu

KARFUSU   Wieħed mill-ismijiet mogħtija lix-xitan. Dan hu wkoll l-isem ta’ logħba tat-tfal. F’din il-logħba jintgħażlu tlitt itfal. Tifel jew tifla j/tagħmilha ta’ Ġesù, tifel jew tifla oħra j/tagħmilha tal-anġlu u tifel ieħor jew tifla oħra j/tagħmilha ta’ Karfusu, jiġifieri tax-xitan. Dik il-persuna li tagħmilha ta’ Ġesù, b’vuċi baxxa biex ma jisimgħuhiex ‘l-anġlu’ jew ‘Karfusu’, tagħti isem ta’ kulur lil kull wieħed u waħda mit-tfal li jkun hemm madwarha. Imbagħad jersqu lejha l-anġlu u Karfusu u jsaqsuha x’tip ta’ kuluri hi tat lit-tfal. Fil-fatt din il-mistoqsija jsaqsuhielha bit-Taljan: ‘Che colore?’ L-anġlu u Karfusu jibdew jissuġġerulha kulur wieħed wara l-ieħor, kif imisshom skont it-tokk. Kull darba li ż-żewġ karattri jaqtgħu l-kulur tat-tfal, dawn it-tfal ikollhom imorru ħdejn dak li jkun qata’ l-kuluri. Fl-aħħar jingħaddu kemm-il tifel jew tifla hemm mal-‘anġlu’ u ma’ ‘Karfusu’, u jirbaħ dak li jkun qata’ l-akbar numru ta’ kuluri u għaldaqstant ġabar l-aktar tfal miegħu. Nies fl-gherien fil-Gran Britannja

Bilqiegħda f’għar, dan ir-raġel mil-Lvant tal-Ewropa, hu wieħed mill-bosta li qed jiġġiegħlu jmorru taħt l-art biex isibu kenn.

L-Estonjan, jidher fl-għerien qrib Stockport, fejn numru ieħor ta’ nies kienu rappurtati li marru joqogħdu, u ħallew warajhom ħerba bil-ħmieġ u l-affarijiet li ħadu, biex ikunu jistgħu jorqdu.
Fl-għar, jorqdu sa erbgħa min-nies kull darba. Hu għar sigriet, mifrux fuq preċipizzju ta’ 20 pied, fuq ix-Xmara Mersey.

Il-qagħda ta’ rġiel u nisa li qed ifittxu kenn fl-għerien, bħal dan fi Stockport, qed jinkwieta lill-pubbliku, peress li ċ-ċifri juru li n-nies bla dar qed ikomplu jiżdiedu minħabba l-qagħda ekonomika ħażina fil-pajjiż. Tul il-pajjiż, dawn l-istess nies bla saqaf fuq rashom żdied b’sitta fil-mija fl-aħħar sena u qabeż l-34 fil-mija meta mqabbel ma’ tliet snin ilu.

F’xi nħawi, il-formazzjonjijiet tal-għerien jipprovdu kenn li hu żgur u xott – u għalhekk iħajjar lil dak li jkun imur jgħix f’kundizzjonijiet xejn umani għaż-żminijiet tal-lum. Jonathan Billings, maniġer ta’ organizzazzjoni karitattiva qal li numru ta’ nies li qed ifittxu appoġġ, fosthom l-immigranti mil-Lvant tal-Ewropa, aktar minn irdoppja fl-aħħar tliet snin.

Ħafna minn dawk li qed ifittxu l-għajnuna huma nies mill-klassi medja, li tilfu x-xogħol tagħhom u tħallew mingħajr ebda dħul finanzjarju. Hu żied jgħid li meta nies hekk jitilfu x-xogħol, tant jistħu li jmorru jfittxu postijiet perikolużi biex joqogħdu fihom. Żied li jaf b’nies li spiċċaw waqgħu fix-xmara waqt li kienu reqdin, waqt li kien hemm oħrajn li mietu maħruqa, wara li xi tfal niżlu ħdejhom u taw in-nar lill-friex tagħhom.

The Olympic Runner

Duncan, now 77 years old, was in hospital desperately fighting for his life. His breathing was becoming weak and erratic. He was slowly losing his fighting spirit.

The pretty young nurse by his side was whispering encouragements and willing him to continue to fight this important battle. She took his wrinkled hand in hers and whispered softly in his ear – “Don’t give up Duncan. I’m here with you. Let’s fight this together!

He heard her and, while slowly opening his eyes, he recalled that many, many years ago a man had also told him these same encouraging words when he was in another difficult situation. Many, many years ago ………………….

At the age of 20 he was representing Britain in the Olympic Games. It was one of the proudest moments of his career. Duncan Foster was considered by many as the favourite to win the 400 metre sprint. He had trained very hard for the event as it was his dream to one day win the gold medal for his country.

Training was very hard. He knew that things don’t always work out the way you plan them, nor the way you would like them to be. However sometimes he was on the brink of losing heart. Yet he did not give up. He wanted to finish what he had started. He finally made it as Britain’s No. 1 hope for the gold medal in this sprint race. On that fateful day, he lined up against the best sprinters from many countries across the world. But he was confident that he could beat them all.

As the Umpire’s starting shot rang out, he was out of the blocks as fast as an arrow. For over half the distance he held the lead in front of all the other big-named sprinters. He felt like he was galloping along the inner track like a fast unstoppable train. He was on course to win the race.

Then suddenly he fell down in severe pain. His hands felt his right foot. He had torn a hamstring. But he was not going to give up. He wanted to finish what he had started. He raised himself up and hobbled to continue the race. Suddenly a man broke out from the crowd, escaped the security and came to Duncan’s side. It was his father who could not stand and watch while his son was down. “Don’t give up son. I’m here with you. Let’s finish this together!

The anxious father and the injured son continued slowly together. But shortly before the finishing line, Duncan’s father let him continue to finish the race alone. Hobbling and in pain, unaided to the finishing line, Duncan breasted the tape and immediately fell to the ground. A crowd of 65,000 people gave him a standing ovation. It was a sight for sore eyes. He did not win the race, but he had finished it.

The identical words of the young nurse now in hospital by his side and of his long-dead father at the Olympic stadium, made him alert to the present situation. He would not let them down. He would not give up. He would struggle with all the strength that God had given him to overcome his illness.

Duncan Foster, with the help of his nurse and doctors, recovered. Some days later he went home. He died five years later, serenely of old age.

Karrakka

KARRAKKA   Dwar il-paragrafu li jidher f’Bejn Kliem u Storja, fejn hi deskritta l-karrakka tal-Ordni, u l-analoġija ma’ xi karozza antika, hi ħaġa stramba li Mikiel Anton Vassalli ma jagħti l-ebda referenza għall-karrakki tal-Ordni ta’ San Ġwann. Hu jiddeskrivi l-karrakka bħala dak il-bastiment li xogħlu kien li jħammel qiegħ il-baħar. Minflok, Vassalli jgħid li din kienet kelma li tirreferi għal dik il-qoxra tal-baħar li kienet tnaddaf il-qiegħ tal-baħar mill-ħama (stromento con cui si purgano i porti. Donna grossa e grassa). Din tal-aħħar hi metafora li tikkorrispondi mal-kliem dispreġġattiv li jingħad meta xi ħadd jiddeskrivi xi mara qawwija.

Karettun tal-Bolrejs

altKARETTUN TAL-BOLREJS   Dan kien ikun tista’ tgħid meqjus bħala l-ġugarell tal-avventuri tat-tfal. Kien ikun magħmul minn injama, x’aktarx tavla żgħira ta’ madwar 40 ċm x 30 ċm, ċatta imma soda, li tkun tiflaħ tifel li joqgħod bilqiegħda fuqha. Minn taħtha jgħaddu żewġ injamiet bħal kurrenti kull naħa tat-truf fil-wisa’ biex mat-truf tagħhom jintrabtu l-bolrejs biex dawn jintużaw bħala roti żgħar li jkunu b’saħħithom. Imbagħad kienet titwaħħal, minn taħt din it-tavla jew twavel, injama żgħira u dejqa fin-nofs minn taħt, u bi skorfina tifforma maqbad li jiċċaqlaq u b’hekk idur skont id-direzzjoni kif jinġibed mill-ħabel irqiq jew lenza, kif ikun hemm bżonn, minn dak li jirkeb il-karettun. Ir-roti ta’ dan il-karettun kienu dejjem ikunu tal-bolrejs (ball bearing races). Dawn il-ball races kienu jkunu meħuda minn xi spare parts ta’ xi ger tal-karozza jew tal-ajruplani li jkunu ġew skrappjati.alt Dawn x’aktarx kienu jinxtraw mingħand xi regettier tal-iskrapp. Bi tlieta jew b’erbgħa minn dawn ir-roti tal-ball bearing imwaħħlin waħda ma’ kull tarf tal-kurrenti, u ġieli oħra fin-nofs taħt il-maqbad forma ta’ salib, dawn il-karettuni kont toqgħod bilqiegħeda fuqhom u tiġri fit-toroq, naturalment fejn it-triq tkun lixxa, u l-aħjar fejn it-triq tagħti għan-niżla. Dan il-karettun żgħir kien ipaxxi lit-tfal għax kienu qishom qegħdin isuqu xi karozza ta’ veru. Ir-roti tal-ball races iħokku mal-art kienu jagħmlu ħoss tremend, u minħabba f’hekk malajr kont tara xi ġirien ħerġin għal dawn it-tfal biex ifittxu jmorru band’oħra. BDL Books - Laqtiet

Din hi ġrajja li spiss konna naqraw fil-leġġendi. Iżda seħħet tabilħaqq.

Neguzjant Ċiniż li hu wkoll miljunarju, mar b’bulldozer fil-post fejn trabba u waqqa’ l-għarajjex tal-injam u qala’ t-toroq kollha tajn li sab. Dan ma għamlux b’xi azzjoni ħażina. Anzi. Xiong Shuihua bena djar lussużi u tahom lin-nies li kienu joqogħdu hemm. Hu twieled fil-villaġġ Xiongkeng, fil-belt ta’ Xinyu, fin-naħa t’isfel taċ-Ċina u dejjem jiftakar kif ir-residenti kienu jindukraw u jgħinu lill-familja tiegħu meta hu kien għadu żgħir.

Għalhekk, meta ta’ 54 sena spiċċa jagħmel il-miljuni fl-industrija tal-azzar, iddeċieda li jpatti għall-pjaċiri… u bla ħlas. Qatagħha li jmur lura fil-villaġġ fejn trabba u u jagħti dar b’xejn, lil kull min kien joqgħod hemm.

Ħames snin ilu, il-villaġġ qisu nqered u ħafna nies kienu jgħixu fi djar bażiċi. Iżda issa, dan ġie mibdul u 72 familja jinsabu ferħana, jgħixu f’appartamenti lussużi. Fl-istess ħin, 18-il familja li għenu lin-neguzjant, ingħataw villa kull waħda, fil proġett totali li sewa qrib l-£4 miljun.

Wara li mar joqgħod hemm, hu wiegħed ukoll tliet ikliet kuljum lir-residenti xjuħ u nies li qajla kienu jaqilgħu flus, u dan biex jassigura ruħu li jistgħu jgħixu ħajja deċenti. Dan il-multi miljunarju l-ewwel beda jaħdem fl-industrija tal-bini u wara daħal fil-kummerċ tal-azzar.

Hu qal: “Qlajt flus aktar milli kelli bżonn u ma ridtx ninsa l-għeruq tiegħi. Jien dejjem ħallast id-djun tiegħi u issa ridt nara li n-nies li għenu lili meta kont żgħir u lil familti, jitħallsu lura huma wkoll.”

Qiong Chu, ta’ 75 sena qal: “Jien niftakar lill-ġenituri tiegħu. Kellhom qalb tad-deheb u dejjem jaħsbu fl-oħrajn. Hi ħaġa sabiħa ħafna li binhom wiret din il-ġenerożità.”
