Caroline Pitcher
Caroline Pitcher is a British children’s author known for her picture books, early readers, and children’s novels. Her work is widely used in schools and libraries and often focuses on imagination, nature, and emotional storytelling for young readers. She was born in East Yorkshire, England, and developed a love of reading and writing from an early age, encouraged by her mother and teachers. As a child, she spent a lot of time outdoors in the countryside, which later became a strong influence on her stories. She studied English and European Literature at University and later worked as a primary school teacher for over a decade, where she also began writing stories and plays for her pupils.
After leaving teaching, she became a full-time author and has written a wide range of children’s books, including picture books, early reading books, children’s novels, short stories, and educational texts. Caroline Pitcher is an award-winning author known for her engaging children’s books, including ”The Littlest Owl.” The story follows a small owl that struggles to fly despite the efforts of his siblings. Pitcher has written various titles, including ”Mariana and the Merchild” and ”The Winter Dragon.” Her lyrical writing and illustrations have garnered recognition and nominations for prestigious awards. Her first published novel was Diamond, which won the Kathleen Fidler Award, marking the start of her professional writing career.
Caroline Pitcher’s writing is often shaped by nature and countryside life, emotional and family relationships, and childhood imagination and experiences. Her stories are usually simple in language but rich in feeling, and she aims to capture experiences that feel “poetic, clear, and immediate.”
Some of her well-known books include The Littlest Owl, Time for Bed, Little One, The Snow Whale, and Cloud Cat. Many of these are illustrated picture books created in collaboration with children’s illustrators.
Today, Caroline Pitcher continues to write and also visits schools, libraries, and literary events to talk about storytelling and encourage children to read and write.
