Beppe Caruana

Beppe Caruana is a seasoned writer known for producing simple, engaging children’s stories in Maltese that are often used in schools and early reading programs. His books are written in Maltese for children and schools, especially for early and middle primary levels. His work focuses on accessible storytelling that helps young readers build confidence in reading while also enjoying familiar, everyday situations and imaginative adventures.

He may only be a young teenager but he has already published his fifth children’s book, one which he hopes will help people better understand his autism. Written in the Maltese language, Jien u Beppe. Beppe u Jien, co-written with the renowned author Clare Azzopardi, takes the form of email conversations between Beppe and Clare. Beppe and Claire share their likes, dislikes, and fears, encouraging young readers to reflect on their own similarities and differences and ultimately promoting a sense of inclusion.

His other books include Toninu jitgħallem jgħum, which tells the story of a child learning to swim and highlights perseverance and confidence, Il-Ħbieb ta’ Ġużi, which centers on friendship and social interaction among children, Il-Mawra tiegħi fl-Ispazju, a creative story that takes young readers on an imaginative journey through space and Għeluq Snin Toninu. Set in Gozo, the book explores the emotions and desires of disabled children, focusing on their wish for acceptance. Collaborating with autistic illustrator Luke Briffa, the story is both thought-provoking and brought to life by Luke’s calming illustrations. These books reflect his style, which is typically clear, educational, and child-friendly, often combining real-life experiences with playful imagination. His works suggest a consistent focus on early childhood themes such as learning new skills, friendship, curiosity, and exploration. His stories often focus on friendship, learning and growing up, inclusion and disability awareness, imagination and adventure.
