Axel Scheffler

Axel Scheffler is a renowned German-born illustrator best known for bringing some of the most beloved children’s books to life with his distinctive, playful art style. Scheffler was born in 1957 in Hamburg, Germany. He then moved to the UK in the early 1980s and studied illustration at the Bath Academy of Art. He initially planned to become a teacher before discovering illustration. Scheffler is most widely recognised for his long collaboration with author Julia Donaldson. Together, they created iconic children’s books, including The Gruffalo (1999), Room on the Broom, Stick Man and The Snail and the Whale. These stories are loved worldwide and have sold millions of copies.
Scheffler’s illustration style is instantly recognisable, warm, expressive characters (often animals with human traits), rich detail and humour in every scene, slightly quirky, sometimes mischievous tone, and soft watercolour textures combined with bold outlines. His illustrations strike a balance between comforting and imaginative, making them perfect for young readers.

Throughout the years, Scheffler has gained numerous achievements. The Gruffalo has sold over 13 million copies globally, many books translated into 100+ languages and several works adapted into animated films and stage productions. Major Awards & Honours include the Mother Goose Award (1993), awarded for the most exciting newcomer to British children’s book illustration. This helped establish Scheffler as a rising talent early on. The Nestlé Smarties Book Prize (Gold Award, 0–5 years category, 1999) and the Blue Peter Book Award (Best Book to Read Aloud, 2000) awards cemented The Gruffalo as a modern classic. His books (especially those with Julia Donaldson) have been shortlisted for and won numerous international children’s book awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal (shortlisted multiple times) and the German Youth Literature Award nominations.

Scheffler has also been awarded Lifetime & Honorary Awards namely the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE, 2018), awarded for services to illustration, and a major UK national honour recognising his impact on children’s literature. Many of his illustrated books have also been adapted into award-winning animated films (BBC/TV specials), and theatre productions in the UK and internationally. These adaptations have won BAFTA nominations and awards, further elevating the visibility of his work. Scheffler’s awards demonstrate that he is not just popular, he is critically acclaimed, his work resonates across cultures and generations and his influence extends beyond books into film and theatre.
