Anton Grech

Anton Grech is a distinguished Maltese painter, draftsman, sculptor, educator, and author whose work has played an important role in the development of contemporary visual arts in Malta. Renowned for his mastery of drawing and his commitment to artistic education, Grech has built an international reputation through his paintings, sculptures, exhibitions, and academic leadership. Born in Malta in 1965, Grech studied at the Malta School of Art before continuing his artistic formation at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze in Italy and the prestigious Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in Germany. During his years in Germany, he became a member of the academy’s academic staff and collaborated with leading European artists, experiences that profoundly shaped his artistic philosophy and practice.

Grech is widely recognised for his belief that drawing is the foundation of artistic creativity and visual thinking. His publication Anton Grech: Drawings accompanied a major exhibition at Malta’s National Museum of Fine Arts and presented a selection of works spanning two decades. The drawings, ranging from anatomical studies and figure sketches to conceptual works, document the evolution of his artistic language and demonstrate his conviction that drawing remains an essential tool for the development of ideas and artistic expression. Alongside his artistic practice, Grech has made a lasting contribution to arts education. He taught at the Malta School of Art and later at the University of Malta, where he became Head of the Department for Visual Arts within the Faculty for the Built Environment. Through his teaching, he has influenced generations of artists, architects, and designers, emphasizing observation, creativity, and the disciplined development of visual ideas.

His work has been exhibited extensively in Malta and abroad, including exhibitions in Germany, Switzerland, China, Belgium, Portugal, Estonia, Georgia, and the United Kingdom. Among his notable projects are the public sculpture Argos at the Cottonera Waterfront and Malta’s participation in the international exhibition Dialogue with Emperor Qin’s Warriors. He is also a founding member of the Maltese artists’ groups stART and WARTI. Today, Anton Grech is regarded as one of Malta’s leading contemporary artists, celebrated for his technical excellence, intellectual rigor, and dedication to fostering artistic excellence both nationally and internationally.
