Amy and Ella Meek

Amy Nicole Meek and Ella Jo Meek are sisters from Nottingham, England, known for their environmental activism and their children’s nonfiction book Be Plastic Clever, published in 2020 when they were still teenagers. They are passionate about reducing plastic pollution and empowering young people to take action for the planet. They co-founded the charity Kids Against Plastic (KAP) in 2016, at ages around 12 and 10, after learning about plastic pollution and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Their campaign initially focused on litter clean-ups and teaching others about the impact of single-use plastics.
Be Plastic Clever is an age-appropriate non-fiction book aimed at young eco-warriors, offering clear explanations of plastic pollution, the life cycle of plastics, and realistic ways kids and families can reduce their impact on the environment. It is a practical, inspiring guide that explains the problems caused by single-use plastics and gives accessible tips on how kids can make a difference. It combines facts, diary entries from the sisters, and actionable advice for reducing plastic waste.
Amy and Ella have spoken at events including TEDxExeter and the United Nations Young Activists Summit, engaged with schools and businesses across the UK to reduce plastics, and helped grow the “Plastic Clever” scheme that encourages institutions to cut down on single-use items. Their environmental work has earned them awards and widespread media attention, and they continue to advocate for youth engagement in environmental issues.
