Alexander Cutajar

Alexander Cutajar is a Maltese historian, researcher, and author with a particular interest in Malta’s social, political, and cultural history. His work focuses on making historical events accessible to a broad readership through meticulous research and engaging narrative.

Cutajar authored Remembering Sette Giugno 1919, a publication that explores one of the defining moments in Malta’s struggle for self-government, examining the causes, events, and lasting legacy of the Sette Giugno uprising through historical sources and contemporary perspectives. This publication is essential for those who want to study and truly appreciate the trials and tribulations endured by our forefathers in their fight for the right to have a say in the running of their own country. The incidents reported in this book, known collectively as the Sette Giugno Riots, took place in 1919 while Malta was a colony of the British Empire. The 7th and the 8th of June and the three days that followed were days marked by turmoil and stained with bloodshed. One hundred years on, this publication marks a centenary from when the Maltese rose against their British occupiers. The aim of this book is to help us remember and reflect on an event of national importance so that we develop an awareness and appreciation towards a particular event in Malta’s historical past which, though itself only lasting a few days, yet its happening influenced to a considerable extent the course of Malta’s remaining colonial history.

Cutajar has contributed to a deeper understanding of Malta’s national heritage and collective memory. His work reflects a commitment to preserving and interpreting the country’s history, particularly significant milestones that have shaped Maltese identity and democratic development.
