Alex Gino

Alex Gino is an American children’s author known for writing thoughtful and inclusive middle-grade novels. Born in 1977 in New York, Gino writes stories that explore identity, friendship, and growing up, often focusing on LGBTQ+ themes in a way that is accessible and meaningful for young readers.

Gino is best known for the novel George (later renamed Melissa), which tells the story of a transgender girl learning to be herself. The book received major awards, including the Stonewall Book Award and the Lambda Literary Award.

They also wrote Rick (2020), a companion story about a boy who begins to question his identity and understand himself better as he navigates friendships and school life.
