Albert Friggieri

Albert Friggieri is a Maltese author, translator, and historical researcher whose work has focused on preserving and interpreting Malta’s rich cultural and historical heritage. His research has centred particularly on the history of the Order of St John, the Great Siege of 1565, and the accounts of early European travellers and scholars who documented Malta during the Renaissance. Through his translations and editorial work, Friggieri has helped make important historical texts accessible to modern English-speaking readers while maintaining their scholarly value.

Among his best-known contributions is Malta – The Bulwark of Europe: Hieronymus Megiser’s Propugnaculum Europae, published in 1998 by Gutenberg Press and co-authored with Thomas Freller. The volume presents the first English translation of Hieronymus Megiser’s sixteenth-century German description of Malta, accompanied by historical commentary and annotations that place the original work within the broader context of Mediterranean history and the legacy of the Knights of St John. The publication has become a valuable resource for historians, researchers, and readers interested in Renaissance Europe and Malta’s strategic role during the early modern period.

Albert Friggieri’s work reflects a commitment to historical accuracy, careful scholarship, and the preservation of Malta’s documentary heritage. By bringing rare and significant historical sources to a wider audience, he has contributed to a deeper understanding of Malta’s place in European history and the cultural exchanges that shaped the island over the centuries. His publications continue to serve as useful references for both academic study and general readers with an interest in Maltese history.
