Alan Gibbons

Alan Gibbons, born 14 August 1953, is a British children’s and young adult author, educational consultant, and former primary school teacher. He has written more than 60 books, many of which explore themes such as friendship, courage, social justice, football, and family life.

Among his football-themed books are The Beautiful Game and The Number 7 Shirt. The Beautiful Game teaches young readers about football history, respect, and important events such as the Hillsborough disaster while promoting fair play and equality. The Number 7 Shirt follows a young footballer named Jimmy as he works towards his dream of becoming a professional player, inspired by famous Manchester United players who wore the legendary number 7 shirt, including George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo. Both books are written in an accessible style, making them especially suitable for young and reluctant readers.

Gibbons won the Blue Peter Book Award for Shadow of the Minotaur and has also been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. He is also well known for campaigning to support public libraries and encourage children to enjoy reading.
