Alain Blondy

Alain Blondy (born 1945 in Bordeaux) is a French historian, professor of the universities, and a recognised specialist in the modern history of the Mediterranean world, particularly the 16th to 18th centuries. His research focuses especially on Malta, the Order of St John, and the Barbary Regencies, as well as the political, economic, and cultural exchanges between Europe and the Ottoman world.

He taught at the Sorbonne (Paris IV) and the CELSA, and has held various academic and visiting positions, including teaching appointments in Tunisia, Cyprus, and Malta, where he spent more than a decade as a visiting professor. He has also been involved with several scholarly institutions dedicated to the history of the Order of Malta and Mediterranean heritage studies.

A prolific author, Blondy has published numerous reference works on Mediterranean history and the history of Malta, along with studies on piracy, maritime trade, and political ideas in the early modern period. His work is known for its broad interdisciplinary approach, combining diplomatic, cultural, and intellectual history, and he is regarded as an important figure in contemporary Mediterranean historiography.
