Adrian Waring

Adrian Waring is an author and practical beekeeper known for his clear, accessible approach to apiculture. Drawing on hands-on experience in hive management and sustainable beekeeping practices, he has built a reputation for translating complex beekeeping concepts into straightforward, step-by-step guidance suitable for both beginners and more experienced apiarists. His work emphasises environmental awareness, colony health, and responsible honey production. Waring is best known for writing Bee Manual: The Complete Step-by-step Guide to Keeping Bees, a comprehensive guide that walks readers through the fundamentals of establishing and maintaining healthy bee colonies. The book covers essential topics such as hive setup, seasonal colony care, disease prevention, and honey harvesting, with a strong focus on practical application in real-world conditions. Waring’s instructional style prioritizes clarity and usability, making beekeeping more approachable for hobbyists and small-scale producers alike.

Adrian holds the National Diploma in Beekeeping (NDB), the highest beekeeping award in the UK. He has served on the NDB Board and acted as one of its examiners. He also holds all the BBKA examinations (Preliminary, Intermediate and Senior) and the UK Certificate in Beekeeping. He has extensive beekeeping experience gained over nearly 50 years and, as one of the UK’s leading and widely known beekeepers, he is able to give practical advice on almost any beekeeping subject. Adrian is very interested in bee breeding. He has operated a bee improvement programme in his own bees for many years and is well aware of the problems associated with achieving and maintaining a selected strain.

Adrian Waring was one of the very early members of BIBBA then, British Isles Bee Breeders’ Association (BIBBA – now the Bee Improvement and Bee Breeders’ Association) and worked closely with the Association’s founder, the late Beowulf Cooper. With a membership number of 62 he was the longest serving member of the association, a fact of which he was extremely proud. He was on the Committee for many years and spent some time as Secretary. He has been involved in the Association’s research projects. He promoted the native bee and joined the BIBBA committee, on which he served for many years. Adrian was appointed County Bee Instructor for Northamptonshire in 1982 after George Sommerville (a BIBBA member) retired. BIBBA awarded him Honorary Life Membership in recognition of his services to the Association.
Through his writing and advocacy, Waring contributes to broader awareness of the importance of bees in ecosystems and agriculture. He supports sustainable beekeeping practices that protect pollinator populations and encourage biodiversity. His work continues to serve as a resource for those seeking to engage with beekeeping in a responsible and informed way.
