Adrian Scerri
Adrian Scerri is a Maltese academic and researcher specialising in early modern Maltese and Hospitaller history, with a particular focus on the diplomacy and political structures of the Order of St John. He graduated in Theology (1997) and later pursued advanced studies in history and Hospitaller studies, including postgraduate research connected to the diplomatic correspondence of the Order’s ambassadors to the Holy See.
His scholarly work centres on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Malta, especially themes such as ecclesiastical history, notarial sources, and the political relationship between the Knights of St John and European powers. He has also researched the role of ambassadors of the Order in safeguarding its privileges and autonomy within Christendom.
Scerri has contributed to academic publications and conferences, including the Malta Historical Society’s History Week proceedings, where his paper “Of Briefs and Privileges: The role of the Ambassador to the Holy See (Fra Marcello Sacchetti)…” examines how diplomatic strategy was used to maintain the Order’s legal and political status in the 1680s.
He has also been involved in academic teaching and research connected to international relations and historical studies, reflecting an interdisciplinary approach that links history with political and diplomatic analysis.
