Adam Hart-Davis

Adam Hart-Davis (born 4 July 1943) is a British scientist, historian, author, photographer, and broadcaster. Educated at Eton College, Merton College (Oxford), and the University of York, he originally trained in chemistry before moving into science communication, publishing, and television presenting.

He is best known for presenting popular BBC history and science programmes such as What the Romans Did for Us, What the Victorians Did for Us, and Local Heroes, which explore historical innovations and the people behind them in an accessible and engaging style. Through his broadcasting work, he became one of the UK’s most recognisable science and history communicators.

Hart-Davis is also a prolific author and editor, contributing to and compiling numerous illustrated reference works, including History: The Definitive Visual Guide, which presents a broad visual overview of world history from ancient civilisations to the modern era. His books combine clear explanations, storytelling, and visual material to make history engaging for general readers and students.
