Abraham Borg

Abraham Borg is a Maltese historical researcher and author whose work focuses on Malta’s connections with the nineteenth-century Italian Risorgimento and the wider Mediterranean world. He is the author of Garibaldi’s Maltese Corsairs, 1837 (Midsea Books, 2015), a study that uncovers the identities and stories of two Maltese sailors who served alongside Giuseppe Garibaldi during his South American campaigns. Drawing on rare archival records from South America, Italy, and Malta, Borg reconstructs a little-known episode in Maltese and Italian history, bringing to light the experiences of ordinary Maltese seafarers whose courage had previously gone largely unrecorded.

In Garibaldi’s Maltese Corsairs, 1837, Borg reproduces and transcribes historical documents—including legal testimonies, letters, and official records—that identify the two Maltese crew members who fought alongside Garibaldi during the 1837 naval campaign in Brazil. His research contributes to a deeper understanding of Malta’s historical links with the Italian unification movement and highlights the role of Maltese individuals in significant international events of the nineteenth century.

Through meticulous archival investigation and documentary analysis, Abraham Borg has helped preserve an overlooked chapter of Maltese maritime and political history, making primary historical sources accessible to scholars, students, and general readers alike.
