A Mifsud
Dr Anton Mifsud is a Maltese physician, researcher, author, and independent scholar whose work spans medicine, archaeology, prehistory, and the study of Malta’s ancient past. Trained as a consultant paediatrician, he combined a distinguished medical career with a lifelong interest in archaeology and prehistoric studies, becoming one of Malta’s most prolific writers on the islands’ prehistoric heritage.
Mifsud has authored and co-authored numerous publications exploring Maltese prehistory, archaeology, anthropology, and ancient medicine. Among his notable works is Prehistoric Medicine in Malta (1999), written with Professor Charles Savona-Ventura. The book examines evidence for medical knowledge and healing practices among Malta’s prehistoric communities, drawing on archaeological discoveries, skeletal remains, and anthropological research to reconstruct aspects of healthcare in the Neolithic period.
His scholarly interests have extended beyond medicine to broader questions concerning Malta’s prehistoric civilization. He participated in archaeological excavations, including work at the important prehistoric site of Tas-Silġ, and has published studies on ancient Maltese culture, megalithic monuments, cave archaeology, and Mediterranean prehistory.
Mifsud is also known for his contributions to public discussions on Malta’s archaeological heritage through lectures, publications, and media appearances. His research has sought to highlight the significance of Malta’s prehistoric remains within the wider context of Mediterranean civilization and human cultural development.
Through a body of work that bridges medical science and archaeology, Dr Mifsud has helped bring greater attention to Malta’s ancient past and the study of prehistoric human societies. His publications remain valuable resources for readers interested in Maltese archaeology, anthropology, and the history of medicine.
