With over 7,500 years of history, underwater archaeological surveys around Malta and Gozo unveiled a rich array of cultural treasures. Ranging from a 2,700-year-old Phoenician shipwreck and Early Modern wooden wrecks to dozens of aircraft crash sites and battleships from the first and second World Wars. Almost 20 historic wreck sites have been opened for the diving public to explore Malta’s underwater treasures, while the world’s first ever Virtual Museum Underwater Malta – www.underwatermalta.org was purposely created. This publication gives the reader a taste of the quality and variety of wreck sites and recovered objects to date, all part of Malta’s complex historical puzzle.
