Jennifer Spagnol

Imwielda Birkirkara, Malta, ir-raba’ minn ħames aħwa, Jennifer kellha trobbija sabiħa. Toqgħod il-Birgu u hija miżżewġa lil Emanuel u għandhom żewġ subien, David u Johann.

Jennifer Spagnol tikteb stejjer kemm għat-tfal kif ukoll għall-kbar, u tikteb ukoll il-poeżiji. Fl-2006 kitbet il-lirika għall-poema sinfonika bl-isem Karba, iddedikata lill-ġenituri tagħha Andrew u Margaret Cortis, li għaliha r-raġel tagħha Emanuel ikkompona l-mużika, fejn ġiet milqugħa b’akklamazzjoni kbira. Fl-2012 ippubblikat l-ewwel ktieb tagħha bl-isem ta’ Ġabra ta’ Novelli, u fl-2015 ippubblikat tliet kotba tat-tfal bejn is-seba’ snin u l-għaxar snin bl-isem ta’ Avventura fi Żmien il-Milied, Il-Pittura Maġika u L-Arloġġ tal-Futur, b’dawn l-aħħar tnejn se jitkomplew permezz ta’ stejjer li ser joħorġu fil-futur qarib. Fis-sena 2016 storja minn tagħha ġiet magħżula mill-Aġenzija Nazzjonali tal-litteriżmu u ġiet ippubblikata f’Big Book għall-iskejjel tal-Istat u tal-Knisja għat-tieni sena bl-isem ta’ Fenegriż u l-Għalqa tal-Karrotti. Fl-istess sena ħarġet ktieb bil-lingwa Ingliża Love Never Dies.

Jennifer kisbet diploma fin-‘Novel Writing’ mis-Centre of Excellence ta’ Londra, u bħalissa qiegħda tistudja għal diploma oħra, din id-darba fil-kitba ta’ stejjer għat-tfal u ż-żgħażagħ.

Jennifer l-hena tagħha taqra l-istejjer għat-tfal. Fix-xahar ta’ Frar 2016 ġiet mistiedna mill-iskola primarja ta’ Ħal Lija biex tmur taqra xi stejjer lill-klassijiet tal-Kinder 2. Għal dawn l-aħħar xhur ħadmet mat-tfal ta’ tliet snin fi skola privata fejn kienet taqralhom ħafna stejjer.

Jennifer Spagnol għadha tikteb l-istejjer u beħsiebha tibqa’ tikteb. Fil-fatt bħalissa qiegħda tikteb rumanz, apparti aktar stejjer qosra għat-tfal u poeżiji.

Mikiel Camilleri Haber

Mikiel-Camilleri-Haber BDL Books

Mikiel twieled fis-7 ta’ Mejju 1988, u ma damx ma beda jikteb. L-ewwel (u l-maġġoranza) tal-kitbiet tiegħu kienu poeżiji u lirika. Fil-fatt, ta’ 6 snin beda jħarbex l-ewwel versi. Biex jiftakar dak li jkun kiteb iktar faċilment, dara jqabbel il-kliem ma’ mużika ta’ melodiji popolari, il-maġġorparti tagħhom kanzunetti tal-Beatles, Queen u Paul Simon. Tnejn mill-aktar artisti li ammira minn mindu kien daqsxejn ta’ tifel ferrieħi huma Elijah Wood u Paul McCartney.

Daħal l-MCAST jistudja l-Media fl-2009 u fl-2014 gradwa b’Baċellerat fil-Media (Moving Image). Wieħed mill-aktar proġetti għal qalbu minn dawn iż-żminijiet kien il-film qasir El Camino Hacia Las Rosas (2014), li kien iffukat fuq il-karattri u l-istorja mingħajr ma kellu screenplay konvenzjonali. Il-film intlaqa’ tajjeb ħafna mill-udjenzi li rawh, u rebaħ il-premju Bronze Palm Award fil-Mexico International Short Film Festival (2015).

Fl-2013 ħareġ l-ewwel kollezzjoni ta’ stejjer tiegħu fil-ktieb Ħallih Ħa Jonfoħ ir-Riħ (Bronk, 2013), miktub għal udjenza adulta. Ħafna mill-ideat għall-istejjer Mikiel ħolomhom meta kien ikun għoddu raqad fuq il-karozza tal-linja fi triqtu lejn id-dar f’Ħal Tarxien, mill-MCAST tal-Arti u d-Disinn, il-Mosta.

Fl-2017, BDL ippubblikaw l-istejjer tal-praspar ta’ Ġużi Fiteni, fil-ktieb Meta Ġużi Kien Abbati (BDL, 2017). Għalkemm l-inċidenti fl-istejjer kollha huma mistħajla, dan il-ktieb huwa mmirat lejn udjenza iktar żgħira fl-età, u tfal. Kien ispirat ukoll minn diversi karattri u episodji li l-awtur kien b’xi mod mess magħhom fi tfulitu.

Fl-2018, Mikiel ikkollabora ma’ Mark Doneo fil-kitba tal-iskript għall-film għaċ-ċinema Hemm Dar il-Qala (The Weeping House of Qala). Films tal-ġeneru horror, meta jkunu maħdumin tajjeb, lil Mikiel jinżlulu għasel daqs l-aqwa tazza nbid ħamra.

Fl-2019, BDL ippubblikaw it-tieni damma ta’ stejjer ta’ Mikiel – ġabra li ssib l-isem ta’ Dal-Baħar Iswed. Dan il-ktieb Mikiel iqisu l-kontinwazzjoni ta’ dak li beda f’Ħallih Ħa Jonfoħ ir-Riħ. Jinkludi fih ukoll selezzjoni ta’ poeżiji bil-Malti li kiteb tul dawn l-aħħar għaxar snin.

Mikiel miżżewweġ lil Christa u flimkien għandhom daqsxejn ta’ tifel ferrieħi li semmewh Elijah Paul.

Alfred Cachia

Alfred Cachia, bin Ġużeppi u Inez, imwielda Micallef, twieled f’Birkirkara fil-31 ta’ Diċembru 1934. Ħa l-edukazzjoni primarja fl-iskola tal-gvern u sekondarja fil-Kulleġġ San Alwiġi. Wara, studja għal rasu.

Għallem fl-iskejjel primarji tal-gvern. Inħatar uffiċjal tad-dwana, uffiċjal għoli fis-servizz pubbliku, konsulent mal-Awtorità għas-Servizzi Finanzjarji ta’ Malta u uffiċjal għoli f’intrapriża privata.

Kiteb poeżija, drama u xogħlijiet letterarji li xxandru fuq ir-Rediffusion u stazzjonijiet tar-radju u ġew ippubblikati f’antoloġiji u ġurnali bil-Malti u bl-Ingliż. Rebbieħ ta’ premjijiet f’konkorsi nazzjonali ta’ poeżija u drama.

Edwin Lanfranco

BDL Books - Edwin Lanfranco

(21.9.1946). Botanist and ecologist.

Born in Sliema, Lanfranco was  educated at  St Elizabeth School, Stella Maris College, and St Michael’s College of Education. He furthered his studies at the University of London from where he  graduated in botany (1973).

Lanfranco taught in government primary (1968) and secondary schools (1968-75), and at the government sixth forms (1975-87). He was visiting lecturer (1978-87) at the University of Malta, where he has been lecturing full-time, mainly in botany and evolutionary biology, since 1987.  Following retirement (2011), he continued lecturing on a part-time basis mainly in the Institute of Earth Systems. He was active in NGOs dedicated to nature conservation and served on the committees of a number of environmental NGOs. He is also member of several local and foreign boards and committees on botanical and environmental matters and attended international conventions and conferences in several countries. Apart from Malta, Lanfranco also carried out field work and lectured in several countries, mainly in the Mediterranean area.

Author of many scientific reports, articles, and papers in local and foreign journals as well as several publications of a popular nature.

P. Edmund Teuma

altP. Edmund Teuma twieled il-Belt Valletta fit-13 ta’ Settembru 1948. Daħal mal-Franġiskani Konventwali fl-1965. Studja t-teoloġija fl-Istituto Teologico Sant’Antonio Dottore, Padova. Kiseb il-grad ta’ Baċċellier fit-Teoloġija mill-Pontificia Facoltà Teologica San Bonaventura, Ruma. Wara l-ordinazzjoni saċerdotali (1974) mar jispeċjalizza fl-ilsna Semitiċi fil-Pontificio Istituto Biblico, imbagħad fil-Pontificio Istituto di Studi Arabi e d’Islamistica, Ruma, mnejn kiseb liċenzjat doppju fl-Għarbi u l-Islamistika. Kiseb ukoll diploma ta’ librar mill-Iskola Vatikana tal-Bibjotekonomija. F’Malta għallem l-Għarbi u xi suġġetti oħra fil-Kulleġġ San Alwiġi. Kien ukoll għal xi żmien visiting lecturer tal-filosofija Islamika fil-Fakultà Teoloġika ta’ Malta u l-Università. Fost il-kotba li ppubblika: it-traduzzjoni tal-Qur’ân mill-Għarbi għall-Malti b’noti eseġetiċi (2000). 

Mark Calleja

Mark Calleja twieled fit-2 ta’ Diċembru 1972 u trabba ġewwa r-raħal ta’ Ħal Balzan. Sa minn età żgħira, Mark kien iħobb ħafna l-qari bil-Malti kif ukoll it-teatru. Minkejja li ħadem f’diversi impjiegi differenti, l-għaxar snin li għamel jaħdem mal-Media Centre Ltd bħala script writer u producer komplew jgħinuh jiżviluppa t-talent tiegħu f’dik li hi kitba. Minbarra diversi drammi teatrali li kiteb u pproduċa, kien hemm ukoll dawk televiżivi bħalma kienu s-serje five06, Marvin u Ħannieqa. Madankollu, l-iktar żewġ programmi li kien iffokat fuqhom għal diversi snin kienu Kurrenti u QalbinNies, fejn il-kitba kienet iddur mal-esperjenzi u stejjer reali tan-nies. Wara li Mark ingħata ċertifikat minn The Writers’ Bureau bħala pubblikatur, beda jaħdem iżjed fuq stili ta’ rumanzi, bl-ewwel wieħed ikun Il-Barbazzal. Bħalissa Mark qed jaħdem ukoll fuq serje ta’ kotba ta’ avventuri għat-tfal u jaħdem fil-qasam tal-gwida tal-karrieri fil-Kulleġġ San Injazju. 

Rita Saliba

altMinbarra kitba għat-tfal żgħar, Rita Saliba għandha għal qalbha l-kitba għall-adolexxenti. Rebħet il-Konkors Nazzjonali ta’ kitba għaż-żgħażagħ u adolexxenti tliet darbiet bir-rumanzi tagħha Inżul ix-Xemx (2011), Bella Berger (2013) u Il-Kulur tal-Lellux (2016) fil-konkors imniedi fl-2015. Fl-2014 ittraduċiet mit-Taljan żewġ rumanzi oħra għall-adolexxenti, Il-Misteru tad-Dniefel tal-Ġebel u Il-Misteru tal-Labirint.
 
Madankollu Rita tħoss il-bżonn li tesprimi ruħha f’kitba għall-adulti wkoll. Xi kitbiet tagħha dehru flimkien ma’ ta’ awturi oħra f’pubblikazzjonijiet bħal Kieku l-Ikel Jitkellem (2009) u Skariġġi (2012). Kitbet ukoll numru ta’ novelli qosra tal-ġeneru flash fiction li wħud minnhom huma ppubblikati f’antoloġija bl-isem ta’ Għidli Mitejn, maħruġ fl-2014. Novelli oħra ta’ Rita Saliba ġew ippubblikati f’Leħen il-Malti, maħruġ mill-Għaqda tal-Malti Università u f’Il-Malti, ippubblikat mill-Akkademja tal-Malti. Saliba ħarġet il-ġabra ta’ novelli tagħha, Satin, fl-2014.
 

Michael Refalo

altImwieled fl-1955, studja fil Liċeo (Għawdex) u wara fl-Università ta’ Malta. Fl-1979 ħa d-Diploma ta’ Nutar u s-sena ta’ wara ggradwa fil-Liġi. Bejn l-1979 u l-2010 ħadem ta’ nutar pubbliku f’Għawdex. Fl-1998 beda kors ta’ B.A. fl-Istorja u l-Filosofija part-time u ggradwa fl-2003. Fl-2009 kiseb Ph.D. mill-Università ta’ Malta bit-teżi “The Maltese Commercial Class 1870-1914. Business, Family, Networks.” It-teżi ġiet sussegwentement ippubblikata mill-Università ta’ Pisa. Kiteb diversi papers li ġew ippubblikati f’rivisti tal-istorja kemm Malta kif ukoll fl-Ewropa. Il-ktieb tiegħu The Maltese Nineteenth-Century Notary and His Archives rebaħ il-Premju tal-Kunsill Nazzjonali tal-Ktieb fl-2015. L-aħħar ktieb tiegħu jismu Waking the Dead. Nineteenth-Century Obituaries as a Mirror of Maltese Society (1815 – c. 1910).

Stanley Farrugia Randon

BDL Books - Stanley Farrugia RandonBorn on 15 September 1973 graduated as Medical Doctor in 1997 and then obtained a Diploma in Paediatrics. He is a specialist in Family Medicine but is a member of various cultural and historical associations including the Malta Historical Society, Agrarian Society, The Malta Map Society, The Akkademja tal-Malti, and has been an active committee member of Din l-Art Ħelwa for the past 25 years. He was involved with a number of restoration projects of Din l-Art Ħelwa throughout these years. He loves research and reading Maltese History, fishing, growing vegetables organically, swimming, snorkelling and diving and plays Subbuteo. Apart from writing a number of articles in local newspapers and magazines, he published a number of books:

As regards Din l-Art Helwa, we are a non-voluntary organization with the aim of promoting culture, restoring properties and educating people. I have been a Committee Member since the past 18 years and is currently member of the Executive Committee and Restoration sub-committee.

Professor Maurice Cauchi

altProf Cauchi was born in Gharb, Gozo in 1936 and graduated MD in 1961. He undertook postgraduate study at the University of London, and, after a brief spell as Lecturer at the University of Malta he proceeded to Australia  (in 1969) to take up a post  as Senior Lecturer at Monash University in Melbourne, and later on as Clinical Associate Professor  at  Monash and Melbourne Universities.
He became interested in migration issues and held positions as President of the Maltese Literature Group, President of the Maltese Community Council of Victoria and Chair of the Ethnic Communites’ Council of Victoria.
He returned to Malta in 1992 as Professor of Pathology during which time he was Chair of the Bioethics Consultative Committee. He became involved with setting up the Migration Museum, during which time he set up the website: www.maltamigration.com, an interactive facility relating to migration issues.
He has written a large number of articles to local newspapers on issues relating to health, social issues, multiculturalism and migration (see website: mauricecauchi.wordpress.com.  He has published several monographs  on these issues (see list below):
